How to Care for Your Piano (Without Losing Your Mind)
A piano is more than furniture—it’s a musical machine. Whether it’s a grand or an upright a little TLC goes a long way. Don’t worry, caring for your piano doesn’t require a music degree. Just a few simple habits can keep it sounding (and looking) beautiful.
Tune It Regularly
Pianos drift out of tune naturally—thanks to humidity, temperature, and time. Aim to tune yours at least once a year, even if it doesn’t sound “off.” Regular tuning keeps the strings healthy and the instrument stable.
Control the Climate
Pianos hate extremes. Keep your piano in a room with steady temperature and humidity. Avoid placing it near windows, radiators, or air vents. A humidity level around 40–50% is ideal—consider a room humidifier or a piano-specific system if your climate’s tricky.
Keep It Clean (But Not Too Clean)
Dust the keys with a soft, dry cloth. For stickier messes, a slightly damp cloth (with water only!) works. Never spray polish or cleaner directly on the piano. For the cabinet, a microfiber cloth is your best friend.
No Drinks, No Plants
Spilled coffee or leaking plant pots are piano nightmares. Keep all liquids far away, no matter how tempting that “piano top latte” setup looks on Facebook.
Play It!
Playing your piano actually helps keep it in shape. It keeps the action moving, the keys responsive, and reminds you to enjoy it.
And if something feels off—sticky keys, odd noises, weird vibrations—call a professional. A little maintenance now can save big headaches (and costs) later.
