Do Piano Technicians Need Perfect Pitch to Tune a Piano?
One of the questions we technicians hear quite often is, "Do you need perfect pitch to tune a piano?" The short answer is no.
While perfect pitch is an impressive musical ability, it isn't what allows a professional piano technician to tune a piano accurately. Instead, piano tuning relies on careful listening, specialised training, and an understanding of how the strings and harmonics interact with one another.
Professional technicians tune by listening for very subtle "beats" between notes and making precise adjustments until those beats occur at the correct rate.
Many technicians also use high-quality electronic tuning devices to establish an accurate reference before refining the tuning by ear. This combination of technology and experience produces a stable, musical result across the entire keyboard.
In fact, many excellent piano technicians do not have perfect pitch, and many people with perfect pitch have never learned the specialised skills required to tune a piano properly. Piano tuning is a craft developed through training, practice, and experience rather than an innate musical talent.
The next time your piano is tuned, you can be confident that it's the technician's knowledge, skill, and attention to detail—not perfect pitch—that brings your instrument back to its best.
